Treatment of Granuloma

Granuloma is an inflammatory disease that can occur as a complication of tooth decay or dental trauma. It forms as a fluid-filled cavity around the root of a tooth. Granuloma can cause discomfort and pain and may lead to complications such as tooth loss. The insidious nature of this disease is that it may progress without symptoms during its early stages. However, dentists at ID Dent know how to detect granulomas, initiate treatment in time, and avoid tooth extraction. Visit us at our clinic for a consultation!

A granuloma is an inflammatory disease occurring due to complications from cavities or tooth trauma. It represents a fluid-filled cavity forming around a tooth’s root. Granulomas may cause discomfort and pain, leading to complications including tooth loss. The insidious nature lies in its asymptomatic early stages. However, ID Dent clinic’s dentists know how to identify granulomas and initiate treatment timely, preventing tooth extraction. We welcome you for a consultation at our clinic!

Macroscopically, a granuloma appears as a greyish-pink nodular formation densely connected to the apex of a tooth root.

Causes of Granuloma Formation

A granuloma around a tooth root usually forms due to inadequate treatment or incomplete removal of dental caries. An ongoing destructive process in the tooth results in pulpitis (inflammation of the tooth pulp). This inflammation can extend into the root canal and lead to granuloma formation.

Granuloma can also be caused by:

  • Root damage;
  • Tooth trauma;
  • Incorrect tooth restoration (incomplete filling fit);
  • Advanced periodontitis;
  • Improper endodontic treatment.

Symptoms of Granuloma Presence

In its early stages, a granuloma may be asymptomatic, and the patient often may not realize it’s there. Often, it’s discovered accidentally during routine dental check-ups.

External symptoms of tooth granuloma

However, as the granuloma progresses, the following (rather evident!) symptoms may occur:

  • Pain around the tooth.
  • Swelling and redness of the gums near the affected tooth.
  • Formation of a fistula (opening) in the gum with purulent or bloody content.
  • Enhanced tooth sensitivity to hot or cold.
  • Bad breath or bad taste in the mouth.

It is important to visit a dentist if you suspect a granuloma as they will conduct diagnostics and provide necessary treatment which can include root canal therapy, infected tooth removal or other procedures focusing on removing infection and saving the tooth.

Disease Diagnostics

Granuloma treatment in Kyiv is conducted only after a thorough preliminary examination. Main diagnostic methods include:

  • Visual examination and patient history collection.
  • Dental X-rays to determine the state of the root canal and granuloma presence.
  • CT scan for detailed assessment of granuloma size and structure.
  • Pulp study to determine inflammation.

Post-diagnosis, your dentist will decide the necessary treatment for dental granuloma focusing not only on disease elimination but also on tooth preservation.

Granuloma in Children – Features

In children, a granuloma may develop from improper tooth development or trauma. However, cavities are the most common cause. Poor oral hygiene and sweet food consumption can lead to cavities, leading to bacterial tooth infection.

Moreover, keep in mind, children’s immune systems are less developed than those of adults, making them more susceptible to infections, including granulomas.

Treatment of granuloma in children involves a more cautious approach and minimally invasive methods considering their age for safe, comfortable healing.

ID Dent Granuloma Treatment Methods

At the ID Dent dental center, various treatment methods apply based on granuloma stage and patient specifics. We’re thorough in oral cavity diagnosis and evaluate case complexities to avoid tooth extraction.

The main therapy methods our clinic dentists use for this condition include conservative treatment and granuloma surgical removal. Let’s examine each method more closely.

Conservative Tooth Granuloma Treatment

Conservative granuloma treatment is applied during early disease stages including:

  • Washing root canal with special antiseptic solutions for removing purulent masses and bacteria.
  • Medical treatment for inflammation reduction and tissue regeneration stimulation.
  • Temporary filling placement to protect from further bacterial ingress.

Tooth granuloma and its stage-wise therapeutic treatment

This method is painless and effective. However, at more advanced granuloma stages, surgical intervention under a dental surgeon’s guidance becomes necessary.

Surgical Granuloma Removal

In cases where conservative treatment fails to yield a complete healing or granuloma is large, granuloma removal in Kyiv is necessary. Several surgical removal options exist:

Capsule Incision

Via this method, a surgeon incises the gum and removes the granuloma through the capsule, followed by thorough root canal washing and gunk removal.

Tooth Hemisection

This removes only granuloma-affected tooth sections. Root part removal results, preserving healthy tooth sections, followed by restoration with suitable treatment options.

Root Apex Resection

Root apex resection involves removing the root’s upper section housing the granuloma. Post that, the root canal is tightly filled to prevent recurrence.

Operation Process

Granuloma removal operations commence with local anesthesia. Surgeons use specialized instruments to access the affected area and remove the granuloma. Granuloma removal is followed by thorough tooth canal cleaning and filling for repeat infection prevention. Repeat operations or subsequent treatments for full recovery may be required in some cases.

Key steps in granuloma removal at the clinic:

Root apex resection

  1. Preparation and Anesthesia. Before surgery, your dentist will conduct an exam and X-rays for granuloma location and sizing. The area around the tooth is numbed.
  2. Access to Granuloma. A dental incision may allow root and granuloma access. Sometimes bone removal is necessary for full granuloma access.
  3. Granuloma Removal. Using specialized tools, the dentist carefully removes the granuloma and surrounding infected tissue. If infected pulp is present in tooth canals, they can be cleaned and treated.
  4. Root Canal Treatment. Post-granuloma removal, the dentist performs root canal cleaning and treatment. This includes infected pulp and bacteria removal from canals, with subsequent sealing to prevent reinfection.
  5. Stitches and Wound Protection. Gum incisions may require stitches. Some cases necessitate absorbable materials or coverings to protect and aid healing.
  6. Postoperative Care. The dentist will guide postoperative care including medication, diet regimen, oral hygiene care, and follow-up appointments for healing and procedure efficacy evaluation.

The postoperative period may range from days to weeks, depending on operation complexity and patient individualities. Regular check-ups and dental instructions adherence aid complete recovery and granuloma recurrence prevention.

Prevention

Following preventive measures help avert granuloma formation:

  • Regular dental visits for preventive examinations and treatments: at least once every 6 months. Patients prone to increased cavity development should visit a dentist every 3-4 months or by an individual schedule.
  • Adhering to hygiene rules including daily tooth brushing and flossing. Consult your dentist for optimal oral care products tailored to your teeth and gums.
  • Prompt treatment of cavities, tooth trauma. If any dental issues arise, see a dentist urgently. Early dental disease treatment is easy, painless, and swift.
  • Healthy diet limiting sugary and acidic food intake. Maintain your diet for not only oral health but overall body well-being.

Granuloma Treatment Cost Formation

Granuloma treatment cost varies based on many factors such as:

  • Granuloma complexity and stage.
  • Applied dental treatment methods.
  • Dentist qualification and experience.
  • Need for repeat operations or post-treatment.

Treatment cost at ID Dent is disclosed upon consultation scheduling.
