Caries

Tooth decay, caries or also called dental caries is a chronic and destructive process that affects the hard tissues of the teeth (enamel, dentin and cementum). Tooth decay is probably the simplest and most common dental disease. It also appears to be the beginning of an irreversible destruction of the teeth, for this reason, the development of this disease must be stopped in its initial phase.

Any untreated caries can lead to serious infections of the gums and bones underneath, affecting their role in maintaining the tooth. These infections can get worse and turn into a dental abscess (a collection of pus that causes severe pain, swelling in the affected area, fever, and general malaise). Tooth abscess cannot be cured with drugs or natural methods; the tooth is generally not restored and the only solution is dental surgery – an extraction.

Many patients ignore tooth decay until they have completely lost the tooth and need to carry out an implant placement procedure (an effective solution, but more expensive and complicated than a simple dental treatment).

How to prevent tooth decay?

It is impossible to completely prevent caries, but there are some methods that can reduce the chance of it:

  • Carrying out a diet. The use of sugary and carbonated drinks must be limited and, likewise, the consumption of citrus fruits (they contain a large amount of acid that destroys tooth enamel).
  • Correct oral hygiene. The teeth should be brushed twice a day, in the morning and in the evening. In turn, you should use dental floss before brushing your teeth and afterwards, mouthwash.
  • Periodic dental check-ups, as well as complete dental cleaning by the dentist two times a year.

Tooth decay treatment

To remove caries, make an appointment with our dentist. He will carry out an X-rays and examine it, subsequently advising you on a specific solution to your case. Based on the results of the session, an appropriate treatment will be prescribed for the patient.

If the dental nerve is damaged and complications arise, the doctor will refer you to an endodontist.

Endodontics is a branch of dentistry that deals with the treatment of diseases of the soft tissues inside the tooth. Intervention in the nervous system is a necessary measure in the treatment of deep caries.

We offer high quality and painless tooth decay treatment at our ID Dent dental clinic. The prices of all services are indicated on the website.
