Edentulism is a pathological condition characterized by the absence of dental units in the row. It significantly deteriorates quality of life, reduces chewing ability, speaking skills, and even the willingness to smile. Today, dentistry offers a solution to this problem. Implantation of teeth is one of the most effective and long-lasting techniques. Together with the dentists of the ID Dent center, we will consider the features of the method, its advantages, indications, and contraindications, as well as discuss the stages of the procedure in detail.
What is edentulism? What are its causes?
Edentulism is the scientific name for the condition in which a person lacks one or several teeth. There are two types of edentulism:
- absolute — teeth are completely absent on one or both jaws;
- partial — several teeth are missing, but others remain.
Causes of edentulism can be varied:
- genetic factors. Congenital edentulism can be the result of genetic anomalies, where teeth buds simply do not form;
- oral diseases. Due to diseases like periodontitis, you can lose teeth if you ignore treatment and do not timely consult a doctor;
- injuries. It refers to damage caused by accidents, falls, hits, or other reasons;
- age-related changes. With age, teeth begin to deteriorate and fall out;
- insufficient hygiene. Poor hygiene causes cavities and gum diseases, leading to teeth loss.
The primary method of treating edentulism is dental implantation. Implants allow patients to regain a full life.
Advantages of the implantation method for edentulism
Complete edentulism implants have several advantages over other restoration methods, such as removable dentures or bridge constructions:
- durability. Properly installed and integrated with the bone, implants can last for decades, whereas other methods require more frequent replacements or adjustments;
- naturalness. Implants not only visually resemble natural teeth but also restore chewing functions, which is particularly important when there is a complete absence of teeth;
- prevents bone tissue atrophy. Implants stimulate the jawbone, preventing resorption (volume reduction), which often occurs with edentulism;
- convenience. Implants do not require special care, unlike removable dentures, and they feel like natural teeth;
- absence of discomfort. Unlike removable dentures, implants are fixed in the jawbone, preventing friction and gum irritation.
Thanks to dental implantation, patients with full or partial teeth loss can not only regain a beautiful smile but also return to their usual lifestyle, enjoying favorite dishes and feeling confident in any situation.
Indications for implantation in complete absence of teeth
Implantation in the complete absence of teeth is recommended for patients who lack teeth on one or both jaws. Main indications:
- complete absence of teeth due to age-related changes or genetic anomalies;
- loss of teeth due to illnesses (periodontitis, osteomyelitis, and others);
- desire to avoid removable dentures;
- jaw anatomical features that do not allow using other prosthesis methods.
Before implantation, a full examination and consultation with a dental implantologist is necessary. Only a specialist can determine if this treatment method is suitable for you and choose the optimal implantation plan.
Contraindications to the procedure
Despite the method’s high effectiveness, comprehensive implantation in full absence of teeth has its contraindications:
- serious bone diseases. Osteoporosis or other diseases can slow down implant osteointegration;
- chronic systemic diseases. These include uncontrolled diabetes, cancer, severe cardiovascular diseases;
- blood clotting disorders. Circulatory problems can cause complications during the procedure and healing;
- inflammatory processes in the oral cavity. All infections and inflammations should be treated before implantation;
- age under 18. Implantation is not done before the completion of jaw bone tissue formation.
Choosing a treatment method should be done individually, considering the condition of the oral cavity, the overall health of the patient, and their financial capabilities. A consultation with a dentist will help determine the optimal treatment option for each specific case.
Which implants are used for edentulism?
Choosing implants is one of the key stages in dental implantation, especially in cases of complete edentulism. Different implant types differ not only in cost but also in their characteristics, reliability, and lifespan. The following table reviews the main types of implants used for teeth implantation in full edentulism cases and their features:
Type of Implant | Country of Manufacture | Description and Characteristics |
---|---|---|
ICX (Germany) | Germany | Made of high-quality titanium, biocompatible, ensure quick healing. |
Neodent (Shtraumann Group) | Switzerland/Brazil | Owned by Straumann company, provide optimal price-quality ratio, fast osteointegration. |
Straumann Roxolid SLA | Switzerland | Made from a unique titanium-zirconium alloy, increased strength and smaller diameter for more complex cases. |
Straumann Roxolid SLActive | Switzerland | Have an improved SLActive surface for quick healing and high stability in the initial period after implantation. |
Each of the presented implants has specific features, influencing the choice depending on the patient’s specific needs and jaw bone condition. ICX and Neodent implants offer economical solutions while providing good quality and durability. More expensive solutions like Straumann Roxolid SLA and SLActive are suitable for complex clinical cases and provide increased strength and healing speed, making them ideal for patients with weakened bone tissue. Choosing an implant is always a balance between price, quality, and the patient’s individual characteristics.
How does implantation for edentulism proceed?
The implantation process for edentulism consists of several stages:
- Initial consultation and diagnostics. The implantologist examines and assigns additional tests (e.g., CT scan) to assess bone tissue condition and plan the implantation.
- Implantation planning. Based on obtained data, a detailed treatment plan is developed. Depending on the clinical situation, it might require installing 4, 6, or 8 implants per jaw.
- Preparatory stage. If the patient lacks enough bone tissue, bone grafting or sinus lifting might be needed.
- Implant installation. At this stage, a surgeon implants a titanium implant into the jawbone. Then begins the osteointegration period, lasting from 3 to 6 months.
- Aabutment and temporary structure installation. On implants, abutments are installed, to which a temporary dental structure is attached.
- Permanent implant installation. After complete healing, permanent implants are installed.
During recovery, strictly follow the dentist’s recommendations for oral care and diet.
How is the price for dental implantation for edentulism formed?
The cost of implantation for edentulism depends on several factors:
- Number of Implants. The price increases with the number of required implants;
- Type of Implants. Choosing premium-class implants raises the price;
- Additional services. If bone grafting, sinus lifting, or tooth extraction is needed, the price increases;
- Type of Prostheses. The cost depends on the materials used for temporary and permanent prostheses;
- Dentist’s qualification. The experience and qualification level of the implant surgeon directly affect the total procedure cost.
