Dental Treatment Under Anesthesia (While Sleeping)

For many people, visiting the dentist is associated with fear and unpleasant experiences. Eliminating anxiety, helping to remove discomfort, is essential for a patient to remain calm during complex dental procedures – such as implantation or tooth extraction. And this is especially crucial for patients who have dentophobia. Dental treatment under anesthesia makes it possible to handle complex dental issues in one visit – a great comfort and peace of mind!

Sedation stands between general and local anesthesia, having the same indications and contraindications. It is a state of psychomotor indifference where the patient responds to stimuli and can be awakened. After sedation, patients feel notably better than with general anesthesia since lower doses are used.

Adult dental treatment in medicated sleep

Who is Suitable for Dental Treatment Under Sedation?

Dental services in medicated sleep are an ideal choice for patients who:

  • are afraid of dentists (suffer from dentophobia);
  • need extensive treatment (a large number of teeth, need for implants);
  • suffer from a gag reflex;
  • have an allergy to anesthetics for local anesthesia.

Contraindications to Sedation

Dental treatment in medicated sleep is safe and effective. This procedure is well tolerated by patients. However, it has several contraindications that need to be known.

Treatment while sleeping is contraindicated for adult patients in the following cases:

  • exacerbation of general somatic diseases;
  • epilepsy;
  • pregnancy (suitability of the procedure depends on the drug used).

Dental treatment under sedation

Children’s dentistry under anesthesia is not conducted in the following cases:

  • under the age of 1 year;
  • epilepsy;
  • nasopharyngeal diseases, including a runny nose.

Types of Sedation in Dentistry at ID Dent in Kyiv

In dentistry, general anesthesia (sedation) can differ by the method of anesthetic delivery. Three methods are used for this:

  • oral;
  • inhalation;
  • intravenous.

For treating children’s teeth, inhalation sedation is most often used: a mask is put on the child to deliver nitrous oxide. Adult dental treatment under anesthesia is usually conducted with inhalation or intravenous administration.

In terms of body impact, medicated sleep can be superficial or deep. Superficial sedation removes anxiety, fear, and pain sensations. The person remains conscious. Deep sedation leads to full immersion into medicated sleep.

How to Prepare for Anesthesia?

Dental treatment in medicated sleep does not require prolonged preparation from the patient. However, following these rules is essential:

  1. Undergo testing to identify allergic reactions to anesthesia ahead of time.
  2. Do not consume food 4 hours prior to the procedure.
  3. Avoid alcohol consumption the day before.

The dentist and anesthesiologist from our clinic will answer all your additional questions regarding preparation for the procedure.

Children’s Dentistry Under Sleep

Treating children under sedation allows for significant dental manipulation and oral cavity sanitation in one visit. By reducing emotional tension and painless treatment under sedation, children develop a positive attitude towards visiting the dentist.

Kaskova L. F. et al.Providing Dental Care for Children Under Sedation // Ukrainian Dental Almanac. – 2013. – No. 4

Teeth treatment while sleeping is conducted for pediatric patients in Kyiv. Children often fear visiting the dentist. Treating teeth under general anesthesia helps overcome this issue. Your child will not feel pain or fear, and the doctor will perform the necessary treatment effectively and quickly. Sedation ensures complete absence of anxiety and discomfort.

It is indicated for children in the following cases:

Treatment of children in medicated sleep

  1. Treatment of young patients (3-5 years). Children in this age group are restless, making it difficult to stay in a dental chair for 1-2 hours. Sedation helps overcome this trait.
  2. Large treatment volume. Medicative sleep is necessary if the doctor will treat multiple teeth simultaneously or remove teeth.
  3. Fear of visiting the doctor. Sedation helps remove emotional tension, preventing phobia worsening.

Treatment using medicated sleep is strictly conducted only after a consultation with an anesthesiologist and a pediatrician. They collect a medical history, determine if there are any drug allergies, and ensure the child has no procedural contraindications.

At What Age Can a Child Be Treated Under Anesthesia?

The treatment of baby teeth under general anesthesia is a safe and comfortable procedure, allowing treatments from the first year of life. However, the decision to use medicated sleep is made individually for each case. The doctor conducts a survey with parents (asks questions about the child’s health condition), collects anamnesis, examines the child, and conducts an allergy test.

How to Prepare a Child for Dental Treatment in Medicated Sleep?

Dental treatment while sleeping for children is only conducted after a diagnosis. The doctor examines the child, conducts an allergy test, and checks the overall health. Individual recommendations for procedure preparation are then outlined. The general advice is refraining from eating 3-4 hours before sedation.

How is Medical Sleep Induced in Children and Adults?

The induction procedure into medical sleep is comfortable and safe.

It proceeds as follows:

  • The doctor inserts an intravenous catheter or places a mask on you — this depends on the chosen method of general anesthesia administration. In 5-7 seconds, you relax and fall asleep.
  • Dental treatment follows immediately, such as tooth removal or implantation during sleep. Throughout treatment, an anesthesiologist monitors your condition.
  • Ten minutes after the procedure concludes, waking from medicated sleep occurs. At this time, no unpleasant sensations — nausea, vomiting, dizziness — are felt.

Then the doctor provides further recommendations and, if necessary, names a return visit date. After anesthesia, avoid driving: call a taxi or ask someone close to pick you up.

What Happens After Sedation?

Medicated sleep drugs are excreted from the body effortlessly and swiftly. Already 10-15 minutes after treatment completion and emergence from medicative sleep, patients are ready to leave the clinic independently. Dizziness, nausea, and poor condition are absent.

If strong medications are used for anesthesia, their removal period will be somewhat longer — up to 3 hours. However, such medicines are still safe and non-toxic.
