Ligature braces
Ligature braces, the traditional ones, are an orthodontic appliance that serve to align uneven dentition and malocclusion, in which the archwire with the “brackets” is connected by special bands (elastic rubber rings). Depending on the material of the system (metal, sapphire or ceramic), white, transparent or multi-coloured ligatures can be used.
Advantages and disadvantages of ligature braces
As with any other appliance, the ligature support system has its pros and cons. Its main advantage is its affordable price for patients and quick results. Traditional braces based on ligatures are much cheaper compared to other types, and this determines the popularity of this appliance among most patients. In addition, ligature-based braces are a favourite among children and teenagers, as they can choose the coloured rubber bands, they like themselves and give their braces their own customized design.
Ligature appliances are certainly a little more uncomfortable than modern self-ligated systems (such as self-ligating braces). They require adequate oral hygiene and more frequent sessions in the dental clinic. The adaptation period to this type of braces takes a little longer for patients.
These disadvantages do not scare our patients, because the ligature-based system is a traditional design that has been being used successfully by dentists for several decades and really provides amazing results. At our ID Dent dental clinic, dental specialists will choose the optimal braces systems as early as the first consultation with them. Regarding the material for making the braces, this will depend on the financial capabilities of the patient and the degree of complexity of the clinical situation.
