Dental inlays
Dental inlays are an ideal method for restoring the occlusal surface if the tooth root is healthy and its crown is significantly damaged. Inlays are very similar to classic fillings. However, there is one main difference between them. When a filling is done, it is done directly in the patient’s mouth, while inlays in dentistry are, in fact, the same fillings but created separately, that is, in a laboratory. Advantages of inlays over fillings
- They allow the restoration of those teeth that have a very damaged crown (25-50%);
- The natural shape and colour of the tooth is precisely recreated.
- The lifespan can be of 7-10 years, while polymer fillings have 2-3 years estimated lifespan.
- Fillings change colour over time but dental inlays do not.
Some disadvantages
- The price of restoration using inlays is higher than that of a classic filling.
- It takes more than one session with your trusted dentist.
Contraindications to the placement of dental inlays
- Patients with severe cavities
- Hard-to-reach tooth surfaces for the formation of a dental bottom under the inlays

Types of dental inlays
Dental inlays and its price can be different, depending on the material that is used to make them. Depending on the material used, we find dental inlays that are:
- Metallic. They are used for posterior prostheses with dental crown.
- Made of porcelain or ceramic. They are the most reliable and durable inlays. They have high aesthetic properties and adhere well to dental tissue.
- Made of composite. Inexpensive material, but less durable than metal, ceramic and zirconium ones; in fact, this is a classic filler.
- Made of zirconium. They are not inferior in aesthetic properties and resistance to ceramic.
