Acute purulent periostitis – inflammation of the periosteum – is the most frequent complication of chronic periodontitis as well as acute purulent periodontitis. Inflammatory changes occurring with purulent periostitis of the jaws cause pain, swelling of the soft tissues of the face, general malaise, and fever.
